Welcome to the review of the Tumi Alpha Bravo Lejeune Backpack

Quick Take

The Lejeune gives you the functionality of a big backpack with the quality of a top-of-the-line bag. It is a true convertible bag, able to become a tote or backpack as needed. Image, functionality, quality. The Lejeune delivers on all three.

Convertible

The Lejuene is referred to as a 'backpack tote' because, as shown below, you can use it as a regular backpack or carry it by hand as a tote bag.

Let's have a closer look at the Lejeune's convertible nature.

The Lejuene can become a tote by using it's top handle. Now that's just insane isn't it? Because most every backpack has a top handle; so every backpack can be used as a tote. Which begs the question: What makes the Lejeune so special? Answer: Two things. First, is this:

Tumi Alpha Bravo Lejeune Backpack Tote handle

Yes, the handle. I actually learned this from experience. I have a regular, non-convertible backpack that I used as a tote an inordinate amount of time. I would carry it by the top handle on the train (a ten minute trip) and, worse of all, hang the backpack, also by the top handle, half full, on a wall mount. After around a month of this treatment the top handle attachment to the backpack showed some fraying at the section where the handle was attached to the body of the bag. When I saw this, I stopped abusing the top handle and used it sparingly from then on.

The lesson is that regular backpack top handles simply aren't designed to bear the weight of the entire bag for prolonged periods. The Lejeune's top handle, on the other hand, is designed for such stresses. As you can see from image above, the handle is quite robust, clearly ready for the bag's use as a tote.

But that's only half of the tote feature. The other half involve the shoulder straps.

In the image below I've highlighted the clasps on the Lejeune's shoulder straps.

Unbuckling the clasps allows you to install the shoulder strap in a pocket shown below:

With the shoulder straps stored, the transformation to a tote is complete.

Material and Build Quality

Here's a closer look at the backpack:

detail of Tumi Alpha Bravo Lejeune Backpack Tote ballistic nylon material

Leather and metal are used on this bag but the main material is ballistic nylon.

Ballistic nylon is a top quality material for soft-sided bags, whether backpacks, or other pieces of luggage like suitcases. Invented for use in World War II, ballistic nylon is abrasion resistant and is very tough. And, as you can see in the Lejeune, it looks really good.

Beyond the materials is the build quality and in this backpack it's uncompromising. We're talking about quality that you can see.

Capacity and Storage

Looking at the Lejeune purely on its ability to carry stuff, the storage space is 36 liters or around 2,000 cubic inches.

This is roughly the kind of capacity that students with full course loads look for in bags or the kind of capacity one would want in a double duty office/gym bag. Simply lots of space - the only thing bigger that comes to mind would be the bigger hiking backpacks.

Here is the main compartment showing a sleeve you can use for a tablet, laptop or the odd book or document.

The open side pockets are waterproof to handle condensation from your hydration bottle or a wet compact umbrella.

The compression straps highlighted below are a reminder of how big this bag is. Big enough that you might not be able to fill it up all the time. The compression straps keeps your load nice and snug even if you underpack.

A u-shaped zippered pocket in front of the backpack has a small organizer section.

I've always regarded the pocket shown below as a sort of secret pocket because it's not immediately obvious. It is long and flat and opens vertically.

Comparing The Tumi Lejeune Backpack

The Tumi Lejeune Backpack vs. the Hartmann Luggage Aviator Backpack

VS
hartmann aviator backpack

There is one way to upstage ballistic nylon: Leather.

This classic bag material is the epitome of luxury and Hartmann gives you full grain Brazilian leather in it's Aviator Backpack; so-called because it was meant to evoke leather bomber jackets.

That said, the Lejeune's ballistic nylon is the more abrasion resistant material, making the Lejuene the tougher bag.

The Tumi Lejeune Backpack vs. the Tumi Alpha 2 T-Pass Business Class Brief Pack

Tumi Alpha Bravo Lejeune Backpack Tote
VS
briggs & riley accelerate backpack

It's Tumi vs Tumi as we compare the T-Pass to the Lejuene.

Both bags are made with Tumi's FXT ballistic nylon.

Choose the T-Pass is you want more organization options - it has 14 pockets and 3 card slots.

That said, you might want to give the Lejeune's elegant simplicity a look.

If you like the build quality of the Lejeune but you don't need that much space consider Briggs & Riley's Accelerate backpack.

This nondescript black backpack exudes understated elegance and, if you've got a lot of gadgets, you'll find it more focused on electronics than the more flexible Lejeune.

Why Should You Get A High End Backpack?

Because It Will Affect How Others Think Of You

Image isn't everything. One could even argue that image isn't anything. Unless it is.

There are many situations in business and even out of business - in social settings - that image matters. How you look. What you use. Image. At the very least, the things you use should not keep people from having a good opinion of you.

This is only a backpack you say? Well. What about this situation: You and a colleague are up for a promotion, you both don't know you're being considered, and there is only one slot. Let's say that ability-wise, your neck-and-neck. Indistinguishable really. The fact is the office can't decide between you both. Now, he goes to work using an old, tired backpack. You go to work sporting a brand new Tumi. I mean really, it's shallow, but it's also how things work.

Because It Will Affect How You Think Of You

You couldn't care less how the office thinks. Heck, you don't go to an office. How everybody else thinks is also none of your business. What gear you use should be none of theirs.

But what gear you use is important to you.

You know that branded gear brings something to the table. Brands make you feel good that you own them. You can test this out by buying a branded product then buying a fake of the same product. When you're using the genuine deal you feel good in your head. When you're using the fake gear, well, you feel kind of fake yourself.

Buy and use a Tumi because this high end brand will feel good to use 'in your head' day after day.

Because You Want To Be Pleasantly Surprised

Forget the brand and the logo. Let's just talk quality.

In order to talk quality let's talk about a backpack that is low quality. The low quality backpack will surprise you in many, many, ways. The straps will break, the seams will unravel, the pockets will develop holes, the color will fade. So many, many surprises - many of them unpleasant. The odds are stacked against you with low quality.

High quality backpacks fail too, but the odds of getting pleasant surprises - giving decades of service, feeling good to use, thoughtful comfort touches - are much, much, higher with a high quality backpack. Our life is defined by the quality of the moments we have, high quality products simply increases the chances of having those good moments.
