Welcome to the review of the Briggs & Riley Baseline Luggage Baseline International Carry-On

Quick Take

The Briggs & Riley Baseline Carry-On is meant for carry-on travel outside the United States. It's got a lot of features but two can be considered major features. The first is its unique expansion-compression system which intends to allow you to pack more yet still keep carry-on dimensions. The next big feature is its built-in suiter. It doesn't end there, this suitcase has an impressive list of features that makes it a worthwhile carry-on to consider.

The Baseline is Briggs & Riley's international carry-on. If you'r flying within the United States you should be looking at the Transcend line also from Briggs & Riley. That's designed for domestic(U.S.) use.

With that, let's take a tour of this carry-on starting with the outside . . .

Outside of the Bag

Here is what Briggs & Riley calls the Speedthru pocket.

The term I'm more familiar with is 'easy access pocket'. It is as shallow as the yellow rectangle I've drawn on the image - the perfect size for a boarding pass. Anything you need to have on hand fast, this pocket is for it.

Now let's take a look at the second outside pocket - a bigger one.

This is a gusseted pocket with a specialized sleeve for a laptop.

Let's go to the back of the bag.

This long pocket is for compact umbrellas, but, of course, you can use it for anything that will fit.

Moving About

Just like most suitcases, the Baseline has a telescoping handle.

Unlike most suitcases which have just one or two lock points, the Baseline Carry-On's telescoping handle has four lock points.

Protecting the Suitcase

Two wheels round out the mobility package. Now let's take a closer look at a wheel.

Each wheel is surrounded by molding that doesn't just protect it but also protects the back bottom corner of the bag. I'm mildly surprised that the molding is made of ABS instead of the more premium Polycarbonate considering that this is Briggs & Riley. In any case, it should do the job fine together with the bag's other corner protectors shown below.

Okey, that was the exterior. Now let's open this bag up.

Let's Get Packing

Here's your packing space.

Now here's a novel feature - the tie-down straps.

Not the usual single or crossstrap. The Baseline gives you this broad tie-down net, added assurance that you'll be keeping your clothes in place.

Expansion

The main feature of this suitcase is the expansion feature.

Other suitcases have expansion features. This is usually an external zipper that you unzip to give you an additional inch or two or space.

Prepare yourself for something different in the Briggs & Riley Baseline Carry-On. You can see it right here in the inside of the bag.

This mechanism allows you to expand the bag giving you 34% more space. The idea is to expand the bag, pack your extra stuff, close the suitcase then - and here's a really clever thing - push down on the bag to compress it. The mechanism will lock when things are nice and snug. The idea is to allow you to pack extra and still retain acceptable airline carry-on dimensions.

Suiter

Now we have another wonderful feature but not as unique as that expansion feature. You can access this feature here:

Under the lid of the suitcase. And no it's not that zip pocket. This seciton unfolds into . . .

a suiter.

We've gone through the main features but we still have some small value-added offerings to look at.

A Few More Things

Over the umbrella pocket at the rear is this curious tab.

It's an id tag.

Next, you also get a tsa combination lock included with this luggage.

Lastly, let's look at this zippered external pocket.

Inside this is a strap that allows you to attach other bags to the Briggs & Riley Baseline Carry-On.

Comparing The Briggs & Riley Baseline Carry-On

The Briggs & Riley Baseline Luggage Baseline International Carry-On vs. the Hartmann Intensity Belting Transit Carry On Expandable Upright

VS

The Briggs & Riley Baseline Carry-On is high-end luggage. I you want something just as high-end but more extroverted (showy?) then look no further than the Hartmann Intensity Belting. This is a very attractive suitcase made of ballistic nylone and leather - just exquisite craftsmanship all around.

The Briggs & Riley Baseline is no slouch in the looks department but it isn't as good looking as the Hartmann. What it does have is that suiter and that expansion feature.

The Briggs & Riley Baseline Luggage Baseline International Carry-On vs. the Ambassador Luggage 20'' Carry On Suitcase

VS

A hardcase like the Ambassador will do a better job of protecting your breakables. Plus the Ambassador is zipperless. If you've been the victim of zipper failure you're going to like the Ambassador's latch system.

The Ambassador is very modern looking while the Briggs & Riley Baseline has more of a classic appeal.

The Briggs & Riley Baseline Luggage Baseline International Carry-On vs. the SwissGear Travel Gear 20" Expandable Spinner Suitcase

VS

The SwissGear Travel Gear Carry On is a more cost-conscious version of the Briggs & Riley Baseline Carry-On. You get a softside suitcase just like the Baseline. Two external pockets just like the Baseline. You also have an expansion feature, a common one, not like the Baseline's unique offering. THe SwissGear does have four spinner wheels allowing effortless upright rolling - something the Baseline does not have.

The Briggs and Riley Baseline Carry-On is attractive while the SwissGear is plain. But looks aren't the only thing. Briggs & |Riley has the one-two punch of giving you expansion and a suiter.
